Please read! Call for HELP!!!

Thanks to all that make the time to read this.

JSun and Rogan

This is going out to all my friends and family on my address book, tribe.net and myspace.com.

This year has been a great one for my dog Rogan and I, living in Portland, OR. Unfortunately earlier in the year, Rogan suffered a torn ACL to his right hind knee. Not having the money to get the expensive surgery on his knee right away, I made the hard choice of waiting and seeing how he would recover from it. He was doing really wonderfully until Thanksgiving of last year. While up at a friend’s house in Welches, OR he was outside while we were eating dinner and tore the ACL in the opposite leg. He now has bi-lateral ACL tears in his knees.

Rogan is a very healthy, energetic and strong 9-year old dog. We are having a very hard time with him not being able to live the active and adventurous lifestyle he and I are accustomed to. As is dad, I am suffering from watching him in pain, when I am unable to provide him with the surgery he needs. He is getting around on his two bad knees pretty well and is showing how strong willed and physically able he is. He will be able to live a very happy and active life with the surgery. His knees will work better than when he had no injury.

I am writing this letter to everyone I know and the surrounding community for help in this dire time for him. I am unable to cover the large cost of this surgery and am barely able to feed myself due to being laid off from my job back in October.

The surgery is a cost of $3500 and will cover everything that will be needed to make a full recovery in only 6 weeks. This is the best and only surgery that the doctors offer to a dog his size and it has the shortest recovery period. Once his knees are fixed, he will be better than before and able to go about his life like he wants too -- spending most of his time with me enjoying the magical outdoors Oregon has to offer, while running in the park up the road from our home in the city, with his friends.

I am asking all of my family and friends in every corner of my world for help in this time of need. If everyone I know kindly donated $20 to his cause, he would have the surgery, no problem. This is going out to well over 300 people in the Internet world, that I know. That would cover all and more. Anything over the cost of his surgery will be donated to a local animal shelter for another dog whose owner cannot afford surgery too.

We are asking from the bottom of our hearts to please help in this situation. This would allow him to live the rest of his years with out pain and loving the active life that he is so used to having.

Please! Look into your hearts and find the time to read this email and post.

Here is the information that is need to donate:
Rogan has a Tribe.net tribe… Friends of Rogan…Woof! There is information there as well as the info for the PayPal account that I have set up.

The PayPal email is: jah2775@yahoo.com

Our home mailing address is:
Jason McDonald
5273 NE 16TH ave.
Portland, OR 97211

My email for any questions or comments is:
…jsun31@gmail.com

Rogan and I thank all that have given the small amount of time to read this call for help. This is coming from the bottom of my heart and is one of the hardest letters I have ever written. Thank you again for taking the time.

Sincerely yours,

Rogan and Jason

SF SPCA is killing dogs

The SF SPCA has a reputation of being a "no-kill" shelter, meaning adoptable dogs and cats are not euthanasized due to lack of space. However, the new president, Jan McHugh-Smith (named by the Society’s Board of Directors on Wednesday, February 7th, 2007) has implemented a new "adoption criteria" that mandates dogs kept at the shelter over 30 days are up for "at risk review" with the outcome being euthanasia. This Saturday, May 26th, 5 dogs will be put down for no other reason than being at the shelter over 30 days; one being a 12 week old lab puppy.

It is a sad fact that millions of dogs are euthanasized each year due to lack of space in local shelters. However, the SF SPCA has proclaimed itself as being a "no kill" shelter. This is no longer the case. However, instead of acknowledging this tragic turn of events, staff has been ordered to be silent regarding this matter to volunteers and the public. It is not fair to lie to the public. The SF SPCA needs to acknowledge its actions and be forthright with the public about its practices.

Next time you stop by the SF SPCA to browse the adoptable animals and perhaps see volunteers wearing shirts and aprons proclaiming: "Ask me how to adopt this dog", the better question might be: "Ask me how we kill this dog".

Desperate Repost ... Foster home needed

Hi everyone!

I am reposting this in the hope that someone may be able to help me and my gorgeous dog Socrates out. It's a big one ... I am moving back to Australia from Boston and want desperately to take my baby with me. However, all the quarantine places in Australia are filled up for the next 5-6 months. Since I can only legally (well, legally-esque - i think i'm already over my visa limitations) stay in america for another month, I cannot wait with him. So, I am hoping to find someone out there who loves animals and is willing to foster Socrates during the time it takes to secure him a spot in quarantine.

He is a beautiful fox terrier/beagle mix, with a truly old soul and the heart of an angel. He LOVES humans, and would bring so much love and affection to you. He's nearly 5, in good health, and I would of course provide a much remuneration as I possibly could, incl his food/vet bills.

It's a big ask, I know, but I have to try and believe that there is someone out there who may be able to help me and my beloved get through this. I've had him for a year, and cannot imagine my life without him. If you are interested, or know anyone who may be, PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE let me know asap!

Hoping and loving,
Lauren and Socrates

I want to make your dog famous!

Well, maybe not exactly famous. But here's the deal. The company I work for (in San Francisco) is doing a book on hybrid dogs--dogs with purebred parents like Puggles, Labradoodles, and all those kids. Yes, yes I know it's just a trendy way to name your mutt, all dogs are cute, and people should just adopt from the pound. Believe me, I know how this conversation can go. However, hey, I'm just workin' here! And, we need "real dog" models. The cool part for you, the doggie's human pal is that you get professional pics of your dog, plus copies of a beutiful book featuring your best friend. For an hour or two of your dog being photographed in the Bay Area. If you're interested, drop me a private message, and I'll give you mroe details. Let me know your dog's mix (like, half Boston terrier, half Jack Russell, or whatever), and if you have a picture in your profile, poiunt me to it. Thanks!

Introducing Peanut!

I am the new Dog-ma of a 9 month old rescue puppy named Peanut. Peanut got a rough start in life and was found wandering the streets of LA matted and sick with Distemper. After a month with some really incredible foster parents, he got much better and came to live with me...it's been a week and I am a very proud Dog-ma!

Peanut is a quirky fellow (some of the more ridiculous parts of his appearence come from damage from the Distemper...like his permanent boner, *sigh*) with a GIANT personality in a tiny body. He loves to play with big dogs (he thinks he's a big dog) and to fall asleep on any available lap.

Peanut and Laura say hello!

California summer hazard

It's called foxtails. Actually several different types of grass awns that can get in doggies, eyes, ears, noses or between their toe pads.
Then they work their way under the skin. It is quite painful to the dog and can be life threatening if left in the dog. So if your dog has been out in the dry grass, check your dog carefully to make sure none are on him/her.
If they are in the dogs eye, you will notice the irritation right away. If they get inhaled into the dog's nose, you should notice that right away too as the dog will sneeze, scratch at it's nose or you might even see a trickle of blood from the nose....
If your dog is shaking his/her head a lot or sitting with it's head titted to one side, it may have a foxtail in it's ear.
So watch out for these if you are outside in long, dry, grass in the California area...

Crating Dogs.

A dog Crate has a purpose...ONLY ONE! To keep Dogs contained while their uncaring owners are at work!
Why "uncaring"? Because THEY(The Dog's Owner) refuses to take the TIME to house train their pet.
House Training involves three things:
1.) Toilet training the animal to use the outdoors(House Breaking a new dog or puppy).
2.) Teaching the dog where HIS boundaries are within YOUR home.(Training your Dog or puppy)
and lastly,Providing the Dog with enough interaction and involvement in your life,so it KNOWS what you expect of it such as Not to chew woodwork and do other damage to your property.
If your home is a house full of breakable Fu-Fu,designate an area thats FOR your dog to be free within,Use Petgates across doorways to do this.
A Crate was designed for one thing only,to "Housebreak" your Pet,it isnt a "Lounging box" not is it comfortable or humane to leave a pet in a box for 14 hrs while you go to work.
What good is YOUR Rotweiller,if hes inside a steel cage on the floor if someone breaks into your home?
Crating an animal negates the purpose of owning a Dog. Would YOU like to spend 14-16 hrs every day in a steel "Cage"(or a cheap plastic one!) just large enough(if the dog is lucky!) to turn around in?
Too many Dog owners are using Crates as an excuse to NOT bother with interacting or training their animal.
what are YOUR thoughts on "Animals kept in CAGES"?

what to do...?

So here's the situation: my son and his wife got themselves a black lab puppy a couple of years ago - they also have a mini doberman and 3 small children...and full time jobs.
The problem is that they don't have a fenced area for Louie (the lab), and they have a very small house. And a surprising lack of common sense, compassion and empathy for other creatures, apparently...
When Louie was smaller, he lived in the house, on the loose, with the children and the other dawg - but when he became large (surprise!), they got him a crate for sleeping, and a smallish kennel for outside. The kennel they had for him outside was only big enough for him to pace in, and the crate is barely large enough for him to stand up in.
For about a year and a half, he was always either in the crate or in the kennel - no more being "part of the family", no play time, nowhere to run.
Then about 6 months ago, the kennel was destroyed in a storm, and they have yet to replace it. Apparently someone they know has offered to give them one that is no longer in use, but that hasn't happened yet.
So now, Louie is in his crate all day and all night - they say they take him for potty walks 3-4 times a day.
I offered to help them pay for fencing, but their landlady won't allow it, I offered to buy them a larger kennel, but no, no, they're going to be getting one from this person they know, any minute now. I've offered to help them find a new home for Louie, where he can be part of a family or at LEAST have a life, but they become angry and defensive, insisting that they could never give Louie away, because they LOVE him!!???
My latest evil plan is to first find someone to either adopt him, or keep him in the interim, then go for a visit, take Louie for a walk, have my accomplice drive up and pick Louie up, and go back to my son's house saying that Louie got away from me - he is a very large, energetic dog, and has actually dragged me a couple of times.
Anyway - I just don't know what to do - my son and daughter in law refuse to listen to me anymore when I bring up the subject of Louie, but I can't just back off and not do anything.
I've thought of an anonymous call to Animal Control, but the problem there is that no one who hasn't been in the house would know what's going on with the dog, so they would know it was me, since I seem to be the only person who is bothered by this, somehow.
Anyone out there in doggie land have any brilliant ideas?
Sorry this is so long - it's a long story.

Hello, I just joined Tribe.net and this tribe. I own 2 1/2 dogs. The 1/2 is a puppy I'm raising for Guide Dogs for the Blind in San Rafael. He's a black lab and is 8 months old. My personal dog, Hansel, is a career change Guide Dog and she is almost 5, a golden/lab cross and is currently being trained to become an air scent dog for CocoSAR. My other dog, Pachita, is our current career change from Guide Dogs, only 2 1/2 years old. She's a yellow lab and hopefully will be trained in Cadaver after I certify with Hansel.

I work for a dog-trainer in Concord, helping her train her board and trains and also helping with starting the Explosives Detection dogs for the Sheriff's office.

I also work as a Vet Tech in Walnut Creek and as a kennel assistant, so I work a lot with dogs there and the few cats that come in.

Hello Fellow Dog Lovers

I'd like to introduce myself. I'm Darlin. I'm new to this tribe. I'm the proud owner of two Boxers. Both papered, and a breeding pair. I whelped two littler with my bitch, then gained my sanity and had her fixed. Her name is Bella De Sonoma, Bella for short. He's Maximum Bruiser, Maxie for short.
Both are fawn. Bella has a blackmask and a white spot on her chest and chin. Maxie has a black mask, white snout and a white collar, with full socks. He is a flashy. He's GORGEOUS!
For the other Boxer owners here, mine are VERRRY typical! Funny, silly, amusing, sweet, adorable and very, very, loving. Completely playful. They're supposed to be out of thier puppy phase by 3, but Maxie at 4 1/2 is still submerged in puppydom. Boo, my nick for Bella, has finally mellowed a bit. She likes to lay in the sun and get her red on. (She's a mahogany fawn)

Bella is a registered therapy dog. I take her to nursing homes, retirement homes, and special needs classrooms. She has the perfect temperment for being handled all day long.

Anyhow, SO glad to have found you!! Nice to be able to talk to a group of people who are into their dogs.
I used to be a cat peron, then a dozen or so years ago, I adopted my first Boxer from Boxer Rescue... and that's all she wrote.

Peace~

New to the tribe. Completely and utterly infatuated with my furkids.
Jackie - half Collie, half German Shepard. Vertically challenged. Speaks German and English, and a smattering of French. The Jackster is a rescue, from a tierheim in Oberusel Germany. Getting him into the states was easy, compared to getting him into the UK, to visit family. 9 years old now.

Molly - total Collie princess. Hates to get her feet dirty. Is possibly the sweetest dog I have ever known. There is simply not an ugly bone in her body, she tolerates even the most rambunctious puppy. Molly had a couple of benign fatty cysts we think her previous owners thought was cancer. Cysts were easily removed, and she's a gorgeous girl. They gave her up, at 9. She's 11 now, and in her forever home.

Me? who cares - it's all about the dogs right?

Have Pet Supplies for Pets in Katrina hit States, where to send it??

Hi guys,
I made a small $$ donation for the Pets in the states where Katrina hit, but me and a friend came up with an idea. We called and emailed everyone we know in Philadelphia area, and asked them to drop off any and all pet supplies they can spear. We have like 5 big boxes ready to go. And huge almost new Dog Crate. We have dog food, blankets, pet meads, leashes, even kitty litter and much more. One of my friends has a SUV, it will all fit in there (I hope) we have so much stuff, the response has been overwhelming, and it’s only been like 4-5 days since we “send the word out”. My basement is filling up fast My friend with the SUV is willing to drive as far as 2 hours away from Philly to find a drop off point. Please, does anyone know of any place within 2 hours pf Philly where we can drop off all these pet supplies, and be SURE that they get to the states that got Hit by Katrina.
Also suggestion, maybe you can try the same in your city, call everyone you know ask for even one can of dog food. Don’t take “no” for an answer.
But before u do that, learn from our mistake! Find a drop off point first !
Please anyone with any inf. I want to get this stuff to these pets in need ASAP.
I open to any suggestions.
P.S. I just got a call from a friend who’s in National Guard Reserve, he has just been sent over there, he says they haven’t even got to the places that got hit the most, yet. And he says it’s much worse than we realize.
Guys I need to get the pet supplies down there, please help Any ideas? They are sitting in my basemen, collecting duct:(
Please anyone, how do I get the supplies to these poor pets.???
